"You" by dodie - a review

Hello everyone! Long time no write amirite? A lot have changed from the last time I wrote last (which was almost a year ago, that's crazy!) so I need to do a big update post talking about life and stuff. First and foremost, I got a new dslr camera! Tbh, that's mostly the reason I decided to relaunch this blog. (I also want to change the look of this blog, check my twitter -which is just @mynicolness- for updates!).

So today - as in the 11th of August 2017 - dodie (with a lowercase d!!) released her new EP called "You"! I decided that for today's blog post I would do a review of all the songs in the EP. Listened to the EP as soon as it came out and I had some fun with some yellow stuff to make this post! Let's just get into it!

Firstly, the cover looks so b-e-a-u-tiful and so dodie-like, I LOVE it.

When this first came out, it automatically became my lockscreen. It is so so so pretty.

So after that being said, let's get into the songs!

In The Middle

Dear people, I present to you the bop of the year. Honestly I  a b s o l u t e l y  love this song. From the moment I listened to it when I stumbled upon dodie singing it live, I thought In The Middle was so catchy. I feel like that's different from dodie's style and I  l o v e  it. I tried finding the meaning of the song when I listened to it the first time (as all of dodie's songs have a different meaning) and I found a few but a threesome was definitely not one of them. The beat is so catchy, it makes you want to get up and dance. (Also, dodie performing In The Middle in SITC with the drums was so good omg)

favourite lyric: "it could be weird but I think I'm into it, you know I'm one for the overly passionate"

6/10

So 6/10 is a song about not feeling enough. I relate to a lot of dodie's songs, and this is one of them. The piano, the violin. the cello and dodie's voice all sound so beautiful together. All the voices at the end also sound amazing all together, it's so cool that dodie decided to include her audience in a song in her EP. Overall, an amazing, emotional song. (Please appreciate the taxi I drew and the picture, it's so hard drawing in Photoshop without a drawing pad)

favourite lyric: "is there pity for the plain girl?"

Instrumental

Instrumental just sound so.. magical? It totally sounds like musical music, so can just user @ doddleoddle compose music for some musicals please? Thanks.

You

The Parisian styled song and the song that named the EP. I said this so many times but this just sounds so beautiful. So this is apparently about falling in love with someone you didn't think that you could fall in love. This is again one of her songs that I really relate to. The vocals in this are so amazing and the kind of vintage-y sound of it adds this little something to the song.

favourite lyric: "whatever it was it was wonderful, but non-functional, oOoOOOOooOh, I really hope I don't love you.

Secret For The Mad

So for Secret For The Mad I scared that, because it is a studio version, they would add more things to it and it would ruin the simplicity of the song. I am so glad that they didn't change it, and I feel that manager Josh kind of didn't want to ruin the simplicity either, as he has said that it is one of his favourite songs because it's that one note and dodie's vocals. That's one of the reasons I absolutely love this because of that. The meaning of the song is also another reason why I love this. It is how things will get better, even if you don't think they will. A song I always listen to when I need this reminder.

favourite lyric: "there will be a day when you can say you're okay and mean it"

Would You Be So Kind

The EP starts with a bop and end with a bop. WYBSK has been my favourite song ever since I listened to it. Again, I relate to the meaning of the song so much, and I used to put it on repeat during a specific time of my life (aYE I should do a storytime about that). Personally speaking, I like the live version more than the original one and the studio version and expected to listen to that when the EP came out. The live version is really similar to the one on the EP, but it doesn't have the part before the end of the song with the guitar solo, which is what I was looking most forward to. Besides that, WYBSK is still one of my faves on the EP, and generally one of my favourite dodie songs.

favourite lyric: wowie I can't pick but probably "Let's write a story, be in my book" or "There's gotta be some butterflies somewhere, wanna share?"

General thoughts:

When the track list for the EP was released, I was so pumped as all of those songs are some of my favourites from dodie. The excitement was so worth it, as the songs were as good as I expected them to be, and even better. So proud of dodie, she just keeps getting better and better. It's totally worth listening.

So that's it for this blog post! Really hope you enjoyed reading through my opinion of the song in dodie's new EP called "You". As I said at the start, I'm so excited to be doing more stuff on here! See you soon (hopefully)!

P.S. Make sure to check the song of the year (hint: it's from the EP)
